Architecture Becomes Art

Group Exhibition
CMOA, Cheongju, South Korea

August 24 - November 19, 2023

In the exhibition Architecture Becomes Art, which showcased a provocative collaboration between architecture and art by featuring 15 globally recognized artists exploring the diverse spectrum of spatial realities where the two disciplines intersect, media artist Paul C. participated with three large-scale works. His pieces reinterpreted media art through the lens of architectural meaning and suggested new directions for the genre.

01.  Canvas of Light series

Physically tangible particles of light revolve around every angle of the object, creating a relationship between light and shadow that gradually fills the blank space—the canvas—with the passage of time. Through the movement of light, the living presence of objects is perceived in real time, and a dynamic narrative of time unfolds. This evokes a philosophical reflection on themes such as “to be aware of the moment” and “meditation is presence,” redefining the work as a form of meditative art. The piece stems from a pursuit of synesthetic aesthetics using the minimal digital elements of light and shadow.

02. Space as a phenomenon of Light

The surface of life, marked by ascent and descent, is expressed through a sculptural balance of metaphors in the form of a staircase and a window. Within this framework, the intersection of planes, lines, and voids reveals surreal imagery created by the relationship between light and physical space. The blending and gradation of different lights, along with sound, converge at thresholds to form a synesthetic composition that feels both real and imagined, transcending the boundaries of perception.

03. Just One Day, Life

This work delicately portrays a subtle, surreal scene where physical objects and spaces are overlaid with intangible shadow imagery. Through a poetic sense of time and narrative, it unfolds a metaphorical reflection: the living room filled with shifting light and shadow over 24 hours becomes an allegory for an entire human life. It is one of Paul C. (Cho Hong-rai)’s signature works, expressing the cycle of a day as the quiet mirror of a lifetime.
