Royal Copenhagen Exhibition Blue&

Royal Copenhagen Pop-up Exhibition
Artspace3, Seoul, South Korea

May 10 - 19, 2023

What tone does your sea carry in your memory? Inspired by the Danish sea, this exhibition invites each visitor to fill in the blank: Blue & _____. Developed in collaboration with media artist Paul C. (Cho Hong-rai), this experiential exhibition reinterprets the heritage of Royal Copenhagen through color, light, temperature, and sound, translating the legacy of 250 years into a multisensory narrative. From the iconic blue to the newly redefined coral and black collections, each tone represents the sea’s evolving character from dawn to dusk.

01. Imagination Zone

Visitors are welcomed by a bold projection mapping that sets the stage for what lies ahead. Echoing the natural transition of the sea from blue to coral to black, the timelapse visual encapsulates the poetic transformation shaped by time. This concept draws from the 2019 Waves of Blue project, where photographer Anders Hviid-Haglund documented 52 moments along Denmark’s coastline. Inspired by this archive, Paul C. reimagined the sea’s chromatic rhythm through his series Reflections of Light and Time, projecting the hues of a single day across the horizon.

02. Attraction Zone

This area showcases the core products of Royal Copenhagen’s three color collections, displayed as artistic expressions of sea landscapes. Black pieces rest atop coastal rocks, coral shines beneath a twilight sky, and blue stretches across a tranquil horizon. Carefully placed spotlights and projection mapping enhance the silhouettes and patterns of each piece, inviting visitors to engage with the craftsmanship and aesthetic identity of the brand.

03. Lifestyle Zone

Here, the collections become part of a lifestyle tableau. Each table setting—Origin Blue, Fancy Coral, and Dandy Black—is styled to reflect a unique persona and mood. A luxurious dinner table, a whimsical dessert setting, and an antique tea table are presented with curated lighting, fabrics, objects, and chairs to inspire real-life interpretation.

04. Heritage Corridor

This informative section explores the brand's deep roots, from Queen Juliane Marie’s founding to the iconic crown and wave marks imprinted on each porcelain piece. Subtle lighting and spatial storytelling along the narrow corridor evoke a sense of mystery and reverence, connecting the past with the visitor’s onward journey.

05. Craftsman’s Atelier

The spirit of Royal Copenhagen lives through the hands of its artisans. The atelier reveals the process of hand-painting porcelain—particularly the Blue Half Lace collection, which requires precisely 1,197 brushstrokes to complete a single plate. The space features authentic tools, books, and displays that recreate a painter’s studio, while a photo zone allows visitors to capture memories with the spirit of craftsmanship.
