‘A Synesthetic Exhibition Exploring New Perspectives and Attitudes Toward Light’

- Paul C. 조홍래

Throughout his artistic journey, media sculptor Paul C. (Cho Hong-rai) has approached light not as a mere surface phenomenon or visual effect, but as the most fundamental unit and essential language of form. The third exhibition in the NEWance series, <Textures of Light>, continues this trajectory, dissecting the primal phenomenon of light and translating the patterns and textures born from its fragments into the sensory material of “weave”—materialized and shaped into experimental forms.

Paul has long explored new aesthetics through the convergence of art and technology, analog and digital. Inevitably, his work has engaged with the phenomena and materialities generated at the intersection of light (digital) and matter (form), arriving at a multisensory aesthetic. From this process emerged the concept of “Digital Craft”—a new genre in which the digital is not simply a tool but becomes a medium in itself, approached with the sensibility of craftsmanship.

In this exhibition, rather than relying on visual spectacle, the artist focuses on the digital’s smallest units—pixels and bits—reinterpreting and reconstructing them. The resulting visual language—the movement of light, the traces of shadow, the trajectories of time, the modulations of space—extends our perception of light beyond the visual into a synesthetic dimension that can be touched, felt, and contemplated. Like the subtle textures of a fabric—sometimes spreading softly, sometimes splitting sharply and intertwining, sometimes enveloping an entire space—the “textures of light” emerge.

Thus, the central theme of this exhibition, “to weave the texture of light,” encapsulates the culmination of Paul C.’s persistent artistic inquiry across his practice.

1F | Memories of Light (빛의 기억)

The Canvas of Light (series) / 빛의 캔버스(연작)

Particles of light—the smallest digital unit—slowly circulate along the frame of the object. The interplay of light and shadow transforms the object’s appearance in real time, capturing and recording the trajectory of time as a sequence of scenes, while the empty space itself becomes a living canvas. Following the layered textures of light, the viewer is prompted to contemplate meditative questions such as “to be aware of each moment,” “to be present,” and “at this moment.” Through the meticulous deconstruction and reconfiguration of light’s essence, the work holds significance as a meditative sculptural experiment.

Drawing inspiration from the principle of the spinning wheel—an invention that has continued since Mesopotamian times—the work pays homage to traditional ceramic artisans through the lens of the digital generation. Here, clay, the analog material of ceramics, is transformed into fibers of light, and the potter’s wheel is reinterpreted as a rotating body modeled after the Joseon dynasty’s Sabang table. Through afterimages of light, a physical ceramic form emerges. The glowing red fiber optics evoke the moment when ceramics are fired in the heat of the kiln, prompting reflection on both the evolution of material and the evolution of craftsmanship. The texture of light becomes the texture of clay, layering and dissolving like the touch of artisans across millennia, embodying what the artist calls “Warm Digital”—an analog interpretation of the digital.

2F | Rhythm of Light (빛의 리듬)

Pixel Bit (series) / 픽셀비트 연작

2025, Mixed media (Solar LCD Module, Acrylic, Lighting)

This installation is composed of sculptural units (modules) that materialize the pixel (the smallest unit of image) and the bit (the smallest unit of data). Hundreds of objects, designed with solar-powered systems and operating autonomously without external electricity, respond to natural light energy. They endlessly repeat the cycles of 0 and 1, illumination and extinction, intersecting and converging to visualize continuity within the disorder of nature—an analog rhythm embedded in the digital.

Bit Brick seriesInspired by the fact that 8 bits form 1 byte—the unit that generates a single alphabet character—this typographic series reimagines data through light. Fragments of light gather to form letters, creating a language at the boundary where nature and code intersect—a grammar of light.

Layered Bit seriesThis series incorporates dyed acrylic panels, exploring refracted and transmitted light to generate layered colors and variations of shadow. Each module acts like a prism, weaving together with its surroundings to organically transform the atmosphere of space in real time. It expands in meaning as “another surface of nature,” a living system, and a poetics of memory and movement.
