In the artist’s words,“This exhibition is neither architecture nor media. It is an experience that resides between nature and humanity, matter and light, stillness and waves.”
Media sculptural artist PaulC (Hongrai Cho) has been invited by the Asan Foundation for Arts and Culture as part of its distinguished exhibition program and will present a solo exhibition at Gujeong Art Center from March 14 to March 29.
The Gujeong Art Center Museum, the first space in Korea designed by the world-renowned architect Jun Itami, carries a unique contemplative aura within its architecture. In this setting, the exhibition unfolds as a moment of coexistence between the architectural space and Paul’s meditative media works, which explore the aesthetics born from the contrast of light and shadow. The result is an immersive exhibition that presents a powerful spatial narrative.

■ A Narrative Convergence of Contemplative Architecture and Meditative Media Art
Jun Itami was an architect who emphasized respect for nature, humanity, and material. Within the geometric structure of the Gujeong Art Center—imbued with his philosophy—Paul’s digitally based works transcend the coldness of technology and evoke a sense of warm human resonance. At the intersection where the lines of architecture meet the light of art, visitors will encounter a profound emotional resonance unlike that of any conventional exhibition.
When Silence Meets Light : Contemplating Light Beyond Time and Space
The serene and contemplative spatial structure of the Gujeong Art Center, designed by Jun Itami, becomes the most fitting vessel for the meditative attitude of existence and awareness—“here and now”—that artist PaulC has continually explored through his "The Canvas of Light" series. Within the stillness of fixed architecture, Paul’s self-illuminating works transform fleeting moments into a sense of eternity, breathing new vitality into the space.
Also on view is Pixel Bit, a unit developed by the artist more than twenty years ago that operates autonomously only through light, without any electrical mechanism. Deconstructed and reconfigured into the smallest digital units, the Pixel Bit series reveals the aesthetic of digital signals through unpredictable rhythms—combinations that can never repeat in the same way twice.
This pursuit resonates deeply with the architectural philosophy of Jun Itami, who sought timeless values by penetrating the essence of materials. Set within a historic space imbued with the spirit of the master architect, this exhibition moves beyond conventional media art reliant on projection or video devices, presenting instead a resonant artistic experience quiet yet powerful an art of contemplation.
■ Works by PaulC

| The Canvas of Light (series) / 빛의 캔버스(연작)
The smallest unit of light, the pixel, slowly circulates around the objects along the frame of the canvas. Having long explored the aesthetics created by the contrast between light and shadow, the artist invites viewers—through the The Canvas of Light series—to focus on the movement of light unfolding in real time. In doing so, the work guides viewers toward an awareness of their own presence in the “here and now.”
Placed beyond the luminous frame, various objects reveal a meditative and contemplative sculptural presence, shaped through the continuous interplay of light and shadow.

| Bit Doza / 비트도자
Reinterpreting the potter’s wheel a traditional tool used in ceramic making for thousands of years through a contemporary lens, BIT DOZA expresses a profound homage from the digital generation of the 21st century to the artisans of the past. In this work, the artist replaces clay, the fundamental material of ceramics, with light, presenting a “ceramic form made of afterimages of light” that exists only on the viewer’s retina.
Furthermore, Goryeo celadon and Joseon white porcelain, recreated through today’s highly advanced technology, are reimagined through dynamic visual crossings of luminous afterimages. Through this process, the work casts a new light on the future sculptural possibilities of traditional Korean ceramics, interpreted through a contemporary sensibility.

| Pixel Bit (series) / 픽셀비트 연작
Pixel Bit is the artist’s unique sculptural digital unit that combines the pixel (the smallest unit of an image) and the bit (the smallest unit of data). Through modules of Pixel Bit developed by the artist, the series materializes digital structures into physical sculptural forms.
In particular, the Pixel Bit modules designed to flicker solely through natural light explore a new ecological and cyclical approach to digital expression. The spontaneous and random combinations of pixels at every moment metaphorically reflect the very essence of digital systems, where each instant forms a new configuration, revealing a new aesthetic intelligence.
“Pixels and bits the smallest units of digital images are the invisible bricks that define our era and the foundation upon which new sensibilities are built. By weaving together the textures of light, this exhibition seeks to become a reflective experience that restores our awareness of presence.”

□ Artist
Paul C.(Cho Hongrai) Multisensory Digital Craft Artist
Paul C. has long explored the aesthetic intelligence and nuanced sensibilities that emerge from the phenomenological and material interactions occurring at the boundaries between light and matter, and between the analog and the digital. Through sustained experimentation that integrates the diverse phenomena of everyday life with digital systems, he has pioneered the field of Digital Craft & as Monument, a practice that intersects the material qualities of traditional sculptural forms with the transformative possibilities of digital media.
In particular, Cho’s work focuses on light the most fundamental and elemental unit of the digital realm. Through philosophical and physical inquiries into light itself, he continues to reinterpret and elevate these investigations into an artistic language shaped by Aesthetic Intelligence, offering new ways of perceiving and understanding light.
□ Space
The Gujeong Art Center is a space designed by the world-renowned architect Jun Itami, created to honor the noble spirit of Kim Won-dae, founder of the Onyang Folk Museum an important repository of Korean traditional culture. Conceived within the historical context of the museum’s 40th anniversary, the building stands as an architectural masterpiece that transforms history into an artistic narrative.
Its roof, shaped in the form of a turtle shell, and the restrained aesthetics characteristic of Jun Itami emphasizing the textures of natural materials harmonize seamlessly with the landscape of Asan. The space transcends its function as a physical exhibition venue, embodying a symbolic place where past and present intersect.
Designed to exclude artificial extravagance and instead allow light and wind to inhabit the architecture, the center offers visitors a contemplative environment in which to engage with art. Today, it is recognized as a distinctive cultural landmark where the legacy of tradition and the innovation of contemporary art coexist.
