Exhibition Introduction

Remember the Tone. What tone does your sea remember?

Inspired by the sea of Denmark, Veam Interactive conceived this exhibition to communicate Royal Copenhagen’s 250 year legacy through color, temperature, sight, and sound—inviting visitors to complete the blank in Blue & _____ with their own impressions.

Royal Copenhagen, the heritage Danish porcelain brand, unveils its identity not only through its iconic Blue but also through reimagined Coral and Black collections. These three tones are drawn from the ever-shifting hues of the Danish sea, from dawn to dusk. To transform the beauty shaped by time into a vivid sensory experience, the brand collaborated with media artist Paul C. (Cho Hong-rae), presenting a new and sensorial interpretation of its identity.

1. Imagination Zone

The first space visitors encounter offers a dramatic projection mapping that sets the tone and builds anticipation. Evoking “the bold beauty layered through time,” this sequence draws a parallel between Royal Copenhagen and the ever-changing sea. Through a time-lapse format, the sea begins in blue, transitions to coral, and fades into black—leaving a striking and unfamiliar impression.

The 2019 Royal Copenhagen project Waves of Blue—a collaboration with photographer Anders Hviid-Haglund, who captured 52 coastal moments throughout Denmark—served as inspiration. Observing the timeline of sunrise to sunset on the horizon, director Paul C. discovered a rich spectrum of color and atmosphere, which he reinterpreted in collaboration with his prior work Studies in Light and Time.

2. Attraction Zone

This is where the key products of the Blue, Coral, and Black collections are revealed. Each space is inspired by a scene from the sea: the Black collection atop dark coastal rocks, the Coral collection reflecting the sunset shoreline, and the Blue collection set against an endless horizon.

Through rear projection mapping, lighting, and display composition, the silhouette of each product is first emphasized, followed by attention to pattern and detail—transforming the products into works of art.

3. Lifestyle Zone

This zone presents a richly styled lifestyle scene featuring Royal Copenhagen’s three tones in real-world settings. Each table—‘Origin Blue’, ‘Fancy Coral’, and ‘Dandy Black’—is curated as a vivid moment: a glamorous dinner table, a stylish dessert setup, and a vintage-inspired tea table. With lighting, fabric, chairs, and objects, each space showcases the personality and potential of the collections in everyday life.

4. Heritage Corridor

This corridor-style informational zone traces the brand’s royal legacy, from Queen Juliane Marie to the present, introducing the story behind the signature crown and wave motifs stamped on every porcelain piece. Ambient lighting in mysterious hues leads visitors down a narrow passageway, building anticipation for the next space and imprinting the tones of Royal Copenhagen into memory.

5. Craftsman’s Atelier

Royal Copenhagen artisans breathe life into white porcelain with painstaking brushwork—requiring 1,197 strokes to complete a single Blue Half Lace plate. This atelier zone recreates the painter’s workspace, showcasing tools, books, and implements. Visitors can experience the spirit of craftsmanship up close and capture memorable moments at a hashtag-friendly photo zone designed as a charming tribute to the brand’s legacy.
